It is September once again, the start of what we New Englander's like to think is our most beautiful season of the year. The trees will soon look like something an artist has painted and actually "He" has. The nights will be shorter, the days a bit cooler and life in a "normal" situation will move on just as the seasons do.
The seasons in our hearts however don't always change--they seem to be locked in one place, and that place is the season that our child died in. Those who are new in their journey of grief want that season to stay forever. Others who are much further along in their grief journey will know that is not the case, that eventually a season will just be a season with all it's flaws and beauty. Time does move on, hearts do mend, and memories will last forever. Winter will follow the Fall and Spring will come along when it should. And Summer will return when it is ready. So too will our journey of grief move forward--in due time and without a time-frame.
I wish you the most beautiful fall--in whatever place on your journey you may be. There won't be roses to stop and smell, but there will be trees dressed in their very best colors for you to enjoy. Give them a look, you might be pleasantly surpised at their beauty and realize that time, like the seasons, do change. In Love and Peace, Pauline Slopek
